WHAT IS QIGONG?
"Qigong is about working with your life force energy, learning how to control the flow and distribution of your energy to improve the health and harmony of mind and body."
The word Qigong is made up of two words: qi (pronounced chee) and gong (pronounced gung). ‘Qi’ means vital ‘energy’ or life force, it refers to the energy that underlies everything in the Universe. The word ‘Gong’ translates as practice, workout, or skill. ‘Qigong’ therefore refers to an ‘energy practice’ or ‘energy workout’ aimed at developing skill in cultivating one's personal energy system.
Qigong is an ancient form of exercise that has been practiced for many centuries by the Chinese for health, recovery from injury and disease prevention. There are many traditional forms, but modern Qigong is considered an evolving and holistic form of self-healing which includes healing postures, beautiful flowing movements, self-massage, breathing techniques and meditation.
Through these various methods, 'qi' (chi) is accumulated and stored in the body, like filling a reservoir. Impure or polluted chi – considered the cause of disease in Traditional Chinese Medicine – can also be cleansed and refined into pure, healing chi.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Qigong is a complete system of self-care which acknowledges that the mind and body are interdependent, and that health and well-being is a result of inner harmony. I have found this beautiful practice to be one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to clear the mind, defuse stress, cleanse emotional stagnation, and balance the body’s energies. Through regular and mindful practice you can continuously improve your mind-body connection.
Qigong teaches you how to regulate your mind to a calm and concentrated meditative state in order to promote balanced physical energy. It is through good regulation of your life energy that physical, mental and emotional balance is maintained.
Other benefits of practicing Qigong may include:
